Bjorn Daehlie Performance Clothing and Alpina Sports Proud Sponsors
of USSA to Outfit the U.S. Nordic Through 2011 |
| |
The U.S. Ski Team has announced that the company headed by Bjorn Daehlie, the most decorated athlete in Winter Olympic history, is to outfit the U.S. Nordic Ski Team through 2011.
According to U.S. Nordic Director Luke Bodensteiner,
Bj Sports had previously outfitted the U.S. cross country, jumping and nordic combined teams through the 2002 Olympics and 2003 World Championships , but previous partnership ended when Daehlie sold his original company.
The new BJ brand of Norway is distributed in North America by Alpina Sports who suggested the brand approach the U.S Nordic Ski Team and offer to supply their “Fabric Equipment” in a special Team Uniform Design.
"We were very pleased to hear from Bjorn again, he was a great partner during our breakout seasons in 2002 and '03," Bodensteiner said.
“That he sought us out to support the re-launch of his brand is real validation of a team that is on the move. “He sees what we're doing, believes in it, and is now an integral part of our support network. I know from our past work together that Bjorn feels a special affinity between Norwegian and American skiing.” continued Bodensteiner.
The long history between the entities has helped create a unique contract that may well be the first of its kind.
Highlights sections outline that:
Competition and Training Clothing:
Bj Sports/Alpina Sports will fully cloth both the US Cross Country and Nordic Combined Team, as well as ski jumping teamss. In accomplishing this, Bj Sports and USSA will work together to bring technical elements to Vancouver that contribute to athletes' high performance.
To complement the cross training program, Bj Sports will also provide summer training gear, the first time a supplier has provided off-season technical wear. “To win in this sport, you have to be one of the world's fittest athletes, and that means some incredible off-season training," said Bodensteiner. "Bjorn understands that and is providing support for it."
Athlete Development.
Uniforms will also be provided for development teams, including the U23 Championships, Junior World Championships and the Nordic Junior Championship teams, enhancing the professionalism of developing elite athletes.
Beyond Equipment-Mentoring.
Bjorn Daehlie himself will bring an additional dimension to the contract by advising selected, top athletes each season.
Resource building.
A final component of the contract, as part of an effort to expand the Ski Team's network of supporters, Daehlie will be an active participant in supporting the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team Foundation's donor VIP tours in Europe. "Having Bjorn involved provides another exciting dimension to our Foundation’s tour to Oslo this year," Bodensteiner explained. –
Bodensteiner hopes for wide support among U.S. cross country skiers by wearing the same clothing of the U.S. Ski Team.
“Seeing the U.S. ski community wearing Bjorn Daehlie gear in races, out touring, training in the summer, and around town will be a statement of support for U.S. Ski Team athletes. It's something the athletes can see, and that they can feel. We really hope to see Bjorn Daehlie clothing dominate the landscape as our fans express their support for the athletes and our team,” said Bodensteiner.

Alpina Rollerski Boots Receive Rave Review by Laura Valaas, USST/APU |
| |
There's nothing like finishing a 2hr rollerski and taking your boots off to find that your feet have been pickled in a brine-y pool of your own sweat. The folks at Alpina, bless their souls, have come up with a solution to the summer time trials of suffocating ski boots: rollerski boots.
These boots (both skate & classic) are a ventilated version of the Alpina racing boots. They have a low cut in the classic boot to expose the ankle to the wind and a mesh upper on the foot box so even the little pinky toes can breathe.
Alpina Sports' Nordic Team Director, Dorcas WonSavage described some of the construction of the Rollerski boots, "Alpina has utilized new materials and construction techniques that are now available, in making the RRS and the RRC. First, because of the effect of taking away so much material from the winter boot meant some of the structural components needed to be changed. Second, as a way to test the new materials and techniques in Alpina's on-going evolution towards the perfect nordic skate and classic boot."
The RRS rollerski skate boot, and the RRC rollerski classic boot will be available only at key Alpina Sport retailers in Summer, 2008. |

Exel Sports Oy of Finland Announces the Appointment of Alpina Sports as their US and Canadian Distributor. January1, 2008 |
| |
Effective January 1, 2008, Alpina Sports Corp will take over distribution of all Exel products in North America; Nordic, Alpine poles and racing equipment, Roller and in-line poles, trekking and Nordic Walking.
Exel Sports will be closing down their company run North American distribution centers effective January 2009, while concurrently ASC will ramping everything up in anticipation of supporting the brand and current dealers through the remainder of this coming season.
The appointment of ASC comes on the heels of a mutual separation between One Way and Alpina which according to ASC’s President, Frank Thibodeau; “simply came down to a difference in product priorities and perceived growth opportunities”.
“By contrast,” continues Thibodeau; “we found ourselves in total sync with Exel. Their range of products is exactly what we have been looking for…it completely addresses Nordic, and very importantly, brings a strong offering to our growing Downhill program”.
According to Mr. Aki Karihtala, President of Exel Sports Oy; “We are very excited about the partnership with the ASC team in North America . They have the sales representation depth, logistical reputation and product expertise we feel the brand needs in the NA winter sports industry”.
Thibodeau was quick to point out that the winter program isn’t all ASC is excited about; “Their roller skiing/in-line program complements our new summer training products group perfectly…and finding a balance to our heavily winter skewed revenue cycle has been a priority since I came on board, it has just taken time to find the right niche…now, together our other new multi-season lines, we see the real possibility to open the doors for year round markets.”

PELTONEN APPOINTS ALPINA SPORTS AS NORTH AMERICAN DISTRIBUTOR November 16, 2007 |
| |
Peltonen Ski Oy (Peltonen), one of the leading manufacturers of cross country skis, has appointed US based Alpina Sports Corporation (Alpina Sports) as their distributor in USA and Canada effective from January 1, 2008.
Peltonen will round out the Alpina Sports offering with World Class Racing, Top Level Sport Performance and Traditional Touring skis. Alpina will continue to also offer its own complementary ski brand designed for the North American Touring and BC markets.
Peltonen’s Managing Director Juhani Eskelinen notes that the appointment of Alpina is an important step in Peltonen’s distribution plan: “We had a very long and positive relationship with our Canadian Distributor but had nothing that could compare with what Alpina Sports can offer in terms of the total North American market access or reputation. For the Peltonen brand, this is an excellent opportunity”.
According to Alpina Sports’ Vice President of Sales, Steve Kvinlaug, “We have been speaking with Peltonen for the last few years. The relationship just jelled and the door opened for us to bring the brand on as our top performance ski line. We are very excited about the product; it has a solid history and a real technology advantage with the patented Hybtonite Nanoepoxy construction and the first in the industry 9 click NIS binding plate.”
Rapala VMC Corporation (Rapala), a leading fishing tackle and sporting goods manufacturer and distributor, is the main owner of Peltonen with its 80% shareholding. Rapala’s own distribution companies sell Peltonen skis and other winter sports equipment in the Nordic counties.
Peltonen’s parent, Rapala, is a leading fishing tackle company worldwide and a leading distributor of hunting, outdoor and winter sports equipment in the Nordic countries. The Group brand portfolio includes global fishing tackle brands like Rapala, VMC, Storm, Blue Fox, Luhr Jensen, Williamson, Marttiini and the winter sports brand Peltonen. Paralympic Champion Cook Retires
Will develop skiers at National Ability Center

PARK CITY, Utah (Oct. 12) - Paralympic and World Champion-ships gold medalist and former World Cup champion Steve Cook (standup; Salt Lake City), who was the cornerstone of the U.S. Disabled Cross Country Ski Team for the better part of a decade, has retired, announced U.S. Disabled Program Director Sandy Metzger.
After losing his right leg below the knee in a 1988 farm accident, Cook started mountain bike racing in 1990, switched to road cycling in '93 and made the '96 Summer Paralympic Team (where he was fifth in Velodrome, seventh in the road race).
As a cross-training device, he added cross country skiing to his quiver in '95 and rapidly surged to the top of the sport, garnering seven Paralympic medals, including double gold in 2006 with victories in both the 5K freestyle and 10K classic and a U.S.-record four medals (all silvers) at the 2002 Paralympics in his own backyard. In total, Cook earned 14 medals (five gold) at the last five major championships. He clinched the 2005 World Cup title at Fort Kent, ME, in the season-ending World Championships, which doubled as World Cup races, by winning two gold and a bronze.
"He's been the backbone of this Team since '98," said Disabled Cross Country Head Coach Jon Kreamelmeyer. "Along with Willie [Stewart, retired '04] and Crenny [Mike Crenshaw, retired '06], 'Cookie' took the Team to a different level - they set the tone for what was going to take place over the next 10 years. He's certainly going to be missed."
According to Kreamelmeyer, who coached Cook through his entire 11-year international ski career, the Team will miss his competitiveness, sense of humor and leadership in the standup discipline.
"He was the model of a true competitor," he said, "Cook was a brown-bag guy who always showed up ready. He never offered excuses and always looked for the positives even if he had a horrible race."
But even more so, Cook was a Team athlete who nearly always spoke in plurals when talking about his success, explained Kreamelmeyer. "He would always say, 'We, did a great job today' when he hit the podium. To me, that's a true indicator of what an outstanding character and competitor he was. As much as he deserved it, he hated the individual spotlight and never was comfortable talking about himself."
Cook closed the 2006 season with four World Cup podiums, three of which were wins, good enough to finish runner-up in the overall title and earn him U.S. Disabled Athlete of the Year honors from his peers.
Starting a new chapter in his athletic career, Cook has been hired by the National Ability Center in Park City, UT, and tasked with developing a disabled nordic program designed to help feed the U.S. development pipeline. He will also continue his longtime employment with Sage's Way, a low-water, sustainable landscape business in Utah.
"I'm sure we'll see him around," said Kreamelmeyer, "I'll definitely utilize him as a coach whenever possible. He's certainly not leaving the sport."

RICHARD & SAM BRANSON TEAM WITH ARCTIC EXPLORER
WILL STEGER AND EVEREST MOUNTAINEER ED VIESTURS
TO BEGIN PRODUCTION ON GLOBAL WARMING DOCUMENTARY |
| |
|
Untitled Document
"Baffin Island Expedition" Marks First Project of The Will Steger Foundation;
Website To Allow Students and Others to Follow 1,200-Mile Expedition
Minneapolis, MN (February 9, 2007) - Capturing the profound changes for the environment and natives of the world's fifth largest island, located near the Arctic Circle, Will Steger has begun production on the timely documentary Global Warming 101 Expedition, Baffin Island '07: The Explorers, with Sir Richard Branson and his son Sam, and famed Mount Everest mountaineer Ed Viesturs. The project marks the launch of "Global Warming 101," the first environmental education initiative of the newly established Will Steger Foundation.
Richard Branson, joining the expedition as a world adventurer and outspoken environmentalist, will be accompanied by his son Sam as Steger lead a dog team across 1,200 miles of the island's breathtaking scenery to five remote villages: living among the Inuit natives, tracking weather patterns, and filming the profound changes that warming has wrought upon the local environment and wildlife. The expedition culminates in May 2007 in the town of Iglulik with a finale featuring "unplugged" performances by major musical artists, to be announced.
Adding an educational platform, millions of students will be able to follow the expedition as part of their K-12 curriculum via the Internet (www.globalwarming101.com). Two educators and Steger will upload their findings daily to the site to further their mission of inspiring young people to become leaders in solving the crisis of global warming.
Will Steger, known as "the Ernest Shackelton of our times," is the most preeminent Arctic and Antarctic explorer (www.willsteger.com). Spending over 40 years on the ice, Steger bears witness to the devastating effects that climate change is having on the Poles, and how that is affecting the entire planet in catastrophic ways.
"This film will be bold in its message - that climate change is real and causing irreparable harm to people and wildlife," explained Steger. "We want viewers to discover the truth for themselves about the effects of global warming and to involve them in the needed solutions."
Commenting on the journey, Virgin Founder, Sir Richard Branson, said, "My son, Sam, and I are very much looking forward to the project and will both learn a lot as well as having a fantastic adventure at the same time. Through our interest in the environment and space we have seen the frightening satellite images from NASA of the rapid decline in the arctic ice cover over the last decade and hope that the journey will contribute something to raising awareness of the uncertainties, risks and effects of climate change before it is too late to save something of our frozen heritage at the poles. On a personal level I have always dreamed of trekking across the frozen wastes of the ice sheet since sifting through the diaries of my ancestor "Scott of the Antarctic" who tragically died during his team's famous exploration of the South Polar region in 1912."
Executive producers include Lloyd Philips (Zorro, Racing Stripes, Beyond Borders, Vertical Limit) and Monica Ord (who has applied her skills in marrying finance with crucial global issues, from a revolutionary AIDS treatment to global warming). Diane Isaacs, the long-time producing partner of Antonio Banderas, will produce the Baffin Island project in tandem with South African director Mickey Madoda Dube. Original music is being written by South African hip-hop recording star Zola, top Thailand recording group Silly Fools and myriad others. The expedition is sponsored in part by Fagen, Inc., the Ethanol Promotion and Information Council (EPIC) as well as Shaklee Corporation and Gander Mountain.
The Will Steger Foundation (www.globalwarming101.com) seeks to promote change through education and advocacy. Established in January 2006, the Foundation is dedicated to creating programs which foster international leadership and cooperation through environmental education and policy. Its first initiative is "Global Warming 101," which aims to raise broad public awareness about global warming as witnessed through Steger's polar expeditions.
Expedition updates and educational information are available at www.globalwarming101.com
Alpina Sports has supplied 12 pair of Discovery backcountry skis for use during this expedition.
